Green Oak has a very high moisture
content which is a mild tannic acid. This acid is very active against
ferrous items and will not only corrode steel tools which are left
in contact but the wood will also turn black at the contact points.
In consequence of this all of our structural products are sanded clean
and finished as smooth as is appropriate. This is done to remove saw
marks and other iron stains caused in the manufacturing process. Please
check out our competitors to see that they too take the care we do.
Once given a surface finish this corrosive effect will be overcome.
Our structures are supplied unfinished for customers to apply stains,
oils or varnishes to suit their requirements. Alternately, the oak
can be allowed to silver naturally. This silvering provides a natural
protection against the elements. Take an ancient piece of silver oak
and cutting into it you will find clean naturally coloured timber
just under the surface. All furniture items are finished in Bri-Wax
and polished to a fine silky sheen. If there is a better wax on the
market please let us know. We have tried so many and Bri-Wax reigns
supreme in our eyes.
