All our oak is carefully selected
from the log. Sixty five percent of the tree is considered unsuitable
for construction. This proportion is higher than the reject rate used
by many timber yards but it means we can be sure of the quality where
it matters.
The top grade timber used for construction has closer grain and no
obvious weaknesses to ensure it is fit for purpose. From the rough
sawn sections we look for attractive grain patterns and knot features
that we try to ensure end up on the face side to improve the aesthetics.
These features can decide which timber is used where and will often
dictate the cutting order.
Once timber is cut to length one end is squared accurately and all
measurements are taken from this datum. For any decorative piece of
work the non-construction grade timber is superbly suited. We seek
the most knotty and feature-laden pieces and look to enhance these
features in their use.
For most small to medium construction projects the largest timber
sections will be of 6x6 or 5x5 for the main members. As these and
all our other timbers are rough sawn the final sizes can vary by up
to ¼”.
